Recent news received from Jim Johnson, the IAFF 16th District Vice President, indicates that DOD may have new plans afoot. As you may recall, when NSPS was repealed, new language also gave DoD permission to explore and come up with something else. In short, Congress told DoD NSPS was not the answer and to go back to the drawing board. DoD has put together a team and is now at that drawing board. There was a meeting on the subject last week and DoD is now in the process of planning other meetings for April. The IAFF and the 16th District will be participating in these meetings in order to assure that a membership protective posture is portrayed to DoD. More information will be provided as this process unfolds. You may also have heard that OPM is exploring a government wide pay for performance plan. How DoD's and OPM's paths are intended to intersect, or if they will at all, is still unknown.

As the process of devising a new personnel system takes off, now is the time to remember that your best chance of impacting this DoD or government-wide policy resides with your elected representatives. It was our friends in Congress that killed NSPS, it will be our friends in Congress that can exert the influence needed to protect your interests under the new system. Please remember that it's through the Political Action Committees that we communicate best with the Members of Congress. Please donate to the IAFF PAC through Local F-282 or directly.
